Mark Nawaqanitawase scored two tries, Daly Cherry-Evans landed a late field goal to make it 19–12, and the Roosters then held on after Greg Marzhew's try with three minutes left. Kalyn Ponga was Newcastle's best.

Marshall joins Geelong as Blakey saga heats up

St Kilda ruckman Rowan Marshall is a Cat. Geelong also gets St Kilda's 2028 third-round pick, and the Saints receive Geelong's 2026 first-round pick (currently No. 14).

The biggest story is Nick Blakey. North Melbourne has reportedly offered about $11 million over eight seasons, but he is contracted to Sydney until 2031 and the Swans say a deal will be hard to get done.

Analysis

Talking points from the week.

NRL

A grand final won in the last 10 minutes

Newcastle had control at 12–0, but the Roosters' finishers turned it. Cherry-Evans' field goal made it a two-score game, and that single point was the difference after Marzhew's late try.

AFL

Contracts don't end trade talk

Blakey is signed until 2031, yet he is still meeting rival clubs. Sydney can say no, but a long-term unhappy player is a hard thing to keep. Watch for a late deal before the Wednesday deadline.

Cricket

South Africa is a tough first assignment

Three Tests in under a month away from home, straight into a 10-Test home summer. How Cummins manages his fast bowlers' workloads in October could shape the whole season.
